association finally breaks its silence. the nra promising to take part in a gun control debate it has scheduled a friday announcement. more on that in a minute. first to the white house and cnn's dan lothian. >> reporter: white house aides say this will be a chance for the president to talk more about the process of setting up this effort which, as you pointed out, will be led by vice president biden. i'm hearing also as part of that effort will involve homeland security, the education department, health and human services and also the justice department will be looking at ways that they can come up with policies to address this issue of gun violence. again, this is the president reacting to some pressure as to what he would do. you know, right after this violent event took place, the president came out and said that he would take action. that his administration in the coming weeks and months would be looking at ways to prevent something like this from happening again. so this is the first visible action that this administration has taken to -- is taking, rather, to meet that demand.

statement since the massacre. james rosen live in washington with that. james? >> good evening. the nra broke its silence a few hours after fox news reported exclusively that the gun advocacy group was soon going to begin, quote, pushing back against the gun control lobby which has been quite vocal since newtown. the nra statement promised to hold a major news conference this friday. the national rifle association of america, the statement said, is made up of 4 million moms and dads, sons and daughters and we were shocked, saddened and heart broken by the news of the horrific and senseless murders in newtown. the nra is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again. around senator feinstein, the democrat who proposes to ban more than 100 kinds of firearms, the nra is preparing to draw red lines, a key provision in the feinstein bill would limit the number of rounds that could be loaded into semiautomatic weapons. and industry sources say that would prove very expensive to gun manufacturers. senator manchin, the gun friendly democrat from virginia

the nra to the table in a very sort of high pressure timetable right now? >> reporter: this struck me because when the president was asked about this during questioning, he said that he has faith basically in members of the nra. so making it clear that he's going to be trying to appeal to actual members as mothers and fathers, that he said when you look at the nra, there are a lot of people there who want to be sure that people go through background checks, they want to make sure that kids are safe. he thinks that there is sort of a place where nra members don't want to see military style weapons in the hands of people, a period or might do harm. that was sort of where he was looking and using the bully pulpit. friday, we'll be hearing from the nra for first time. they have been saying no comment. they have remained mum following the shooting in connecticut on friday. but this is just a really a sign now that things are very much heating up here, that we will be hearing from them on friday and that we heard from the president getting specific today, brooke. >> nra releasing a statemen

gun violence. the nra is expected to speak out tomorrow in its first news conference since the tragedy. and abc's jake tapper joins us from the white house. with the very latest. you asked the president yesterday in the news conference, where have you been for four years on this issue to eradicate semiautomatic weapons? >> reporter: that's right. then-senator biden had written that ban into law in 1994. but it expired in 2004. the vice president will be meeting with chiefs of police who support reinstating that ban. and the president will be reaching out to lawmakers to try to come up with post-newtown solutions. president obama had promised the citizens of newtown meaningful action. and in a morning press conference, he explained what that meant. an administration focused on preventing future tragedies by focusing on mental health, culture, education, and gun control. >> the fact that this problem is complex can no longer be an excuse for doing nothing. the fact that we can't prevent every act of violence doesn't mean we can't steadily reduce the violence and prevent the very worst vi
from the nra say they want more gun control? >> that's right. mark warner of virginia says he thinks this was game changer because of the number of children involved. he's a moderate democrat who was opposed to gun control and now says he's ready to look at it. joe manchin of west virginia saying much the same. he also said while he's been opposed to gun control, he thinks it needs to be looked at now. there needs to be some kind of action for both sides to come together and mayor michael bloomberg, who has been outspoken, was asked about whether the fiscal cliff and other issues will push gun control to the back burner. he mocked that idea. take a listen. >> if congress and the president can't focus on two things at once, who on earth did we elect? >> one thing that might find bipartisan support is diane feinstein says she'll reintroduce a ban on assault weapon which is people across the political spectrum have said go a bit mar. maybe they need to be rained in. and the white house is saying that's one specific thing the president would support. >> john: ed henry tonight. thanks. >>

security guard on campus and another one nearby could not stop it. >> the nra's blanket call to arm our schools is really nothing more than a distraction. >> reporter: some teachers in utah say they want more gun training. and organizers are already planning another class for the next holiday break. cecilia vega, abc news, los angeles. >> you didn't have any armed teachers when you grew up, did you? >> i did. i had an armed teacher, not a teacher, an officer and a drug sniffing dog to go around and sniff the lockers. but i never thought about whether they made me feel safe. >> what do you think now in retrospect, do you think it kept your school safe? >> it may have. i grew up in a small town. we never had too many bad things happen. >> the discussions come up after newtown. these are very important discussions people are having about how to keep schools safe. i think the question i would ask, where do you draw the line? if it's teachers that are armed, who is to say parents might not say we want to patrol our kid's school? i don't know the answers to that. it's very complicated. >> it
